Level T asked: The interest rate on an unsubsidized Stafford student loan is 6.8%. How often does interest acculumate on such a loan? For example, if my loan is $5000, how do I calculate when and how much interest is capitalized onto the loan. Thank you for your help.

Itsme asked: I already have a home loan with ICICI on a floating interest rate. I’am looking for another loan.Should I clear this loan first to avail another loan or should I continue paying the EMIs for the entire tenure(This is a huge amount I will be paying by the end).
“Clearing a home loan” is what I meant of getting rid of the loan by making a pre-payment.

John S asked: I don’t know my credit score, but I can give you some details. I have been working out of college for 7 months. I make $32000 a year. I have been paying rent and utilities for 27 straight months without any late payments. I also have student loans, of which I pay $55/month and my parents pay the remaining $120/month. I have one credit card with a $1000 limit and never missed a payment and owe $0. The only other thing I pay for (other than usual groceries, etc) is car insurance.
What are my chances of getting a $12-13k loan for a car? If it helps, I will be putting $5k down on it. I may also chose to go private sale for the car, but will still need the $12-13k loan and pay the difference in cash.
ALSO, important…I won’t have a cosigner. I don’t have anyone who can cosign for me.
Thanks everyone for the initial responses. I have already resorted to the fact that my interest rate is going to be a little high. If I could get a rate around 10-12% then I should be good with the monthly payment. I calculated using 10% and was under my threshold payment-wise. I figure if I put 30% down on the cost of the car (minus taxes, title) then I shouldn’t be upside-down on the loan.

BDZ asked: I have an ARM. I cannot refinance. How can I go about negotiating a loan modification with my lender. I don’t want to be just a name and account number. I can meet the existing payments and to date have not fallen behind. If they raise the interest rate any further then that will be the tipping point. Are there organizations out there to help me such as HUD, etc. Do I already have to be in default before they’ll consider a loan modification?

BlackRepublican asked: A friend of mine currently owns a 2006 vehicle that he plans on keeping for a long time. He financed it for I think about 5 years @ 17% to 18% interest. He has owned the car for almost 2 years now, but he came to me because he is getting offer letters from banks about refinancing. If he refinances it will extend the length of the term, but at a lower interest rate. Is it best for him to refinance or stay with what he has?
